Welcome!
Philip Dawes Fine Art Gallery is divided into
eleven sub-galleries of different headings. The basic style
is naturalistic painting with occasional supra-real overtones.
There are paintings in oil on canvas,
watercolour, ink and wash and drawings in pencil, as well as the artist's
other skills under the Artisan Gallery.
The artist has exhibited in galleries in Britain, Germany and Italy. London galleries include:
The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, Piccadilly; Piccadilly Gallery;
Mermaid Theatre Gallery, City of London;
Gallery 45, Hampstead; Kingsgate
Workshops Gallery, West Hampstead; Hesketh Hubbard Art Society, et al.
And when in Ischia in 1979, he achieved
1st prize in an open painters
competition.
Portraits include: Sir William Walton, Princess Diana, Lord Tweedsmuir,
Bishop of Rochester, and others.
Descriptions of some works
has yet to be completed, and the narrative of others is either to be
completed or written at a later date.
N.B: The quality of the photographs of
many of the paintings leaves much to be desired. This was partly due to two
factors:
1. The artist did not take due care in photographing the
works. This is shown in one particular landscape painting where shadows are
cast on the canvas by the branches of a tree behind.
2. The films of
the paintings photographed during the artist's period in Ischia,
Italy, were developed by a local photographic laboratory.
Unfortunately, the owner of the establishment used very old developer
solution, the consequences of which resulted in inferior images where
the colours were washed out. It is not possible to rectify film
negatives that have been largely destroyed by worn out, used up
chemicals. Thus
the photographs do not reflect the
true and accurate colours
of the paintings. Many of them are washed out in colour. The viewer may, however, have an appreciation of the type
of style, technique, etc. The paintings and drawings in stock
will be re-photographed and uploaded to replace existing poor
photographs of the works. Other paintings that have been sold, where there are poor
photographic images, cannot be re-photographed by the
artist. More better quality photographs will be uploaded during 2006.
