James O'Connor

Picture title: Portrait of James O'Connor. 1988. Commissioned by the sitter.
Oil on canvas. Size: 31-1/2" x 24-3/4" (80cm x 63cm).
James O'Connor is an art dealer, raconteur and one-time thespian. He was a long-time
partner of the artist Edward Wolfe, RA, <http://www.waterman.co.uk/pages/thumbnails/56.html>
one of whose portraits stands behind the sitter. In his younger days, following theatre
acting in Dublin, James had aspirations to become a film star, and went to Hollywood
immediately upon leaving university in Dublin, Ireland. After many years of endeavours
his ambitions to make his mark in the film industry were to no avail, and instead, he was
caught up in the wheel of licentious degradation and corruption of which Hollywood is
renowned. Inheriting the entire collection of Edward Wolf's paintings following the artist's
death in 1982, he was drawn into the world of art, and thus became an art dealer. Since
that time he has arranged and held several exhibitions of Wolfe's paintings in and
around London.
Note: This photograph of the painting has lost much of the fine detail and colour subtlety.
