September morning, Ischia

Picture title: September morning. 1st
Prize in "The feeling of Ischia, 1979."
Oil on canvas. Size: 23-5/8" x 27-1/2" (60cm x 70cm)
The painting was retained by the administration of the town of Ischia
that organised the competition.
Note: The photo of the painting above has lost much of the fine
detail and colour subtlety.
The competition was an annual event, with the following rules:
The work should be by one artist, painted in one day depicting 'the
feeling of Ischia.'
The blank canvas, card or paper must be officially stamped on the reverse
at 8.0am,
the day of the competition, and returned at 5.0pm the same day to the
administration
collection point.
This left me less than seven hours to drive up to my
pre-chosen location on the mountain
for the scene, take the equipment out of the car, set up the easel, paints
and canvas,
squeezing oil paints onto the palette and execute the work; then clean the
sable brushes
and palette and load everything into the car and drive back to the
administration point
to register and lodge the finished work. The announcement of the winner
came at a presentation
about ten to fourteen days later. First prize was the grand sum of 300,000 lira,* and
a free ten days exhibition
at the administration's town hall gallery about six weeks later. The administration
kept the painting for its offices. Oh, and there was an interview on the
prime spot of the Art and Culture program of the local TV, which probably
99.99999 percent of the locals did not watch and the tourists never knew
about..
* I have forgotten the conversion of Italian Lira to £-Sterling. |
