Frederick Lee Woolley

Picture title: Portrait of Frederick Lee Woolley. Commissioned by the sitter. 1996.
Oil on canvas. Size: 23-5/8" x 20" (61cm x 51cm).
Mr Woolley requested another portrait of himself for his family, prior to the artist's
completion of the official portrait. It was his long-held ambition to become a member of the
local shooting club, (pheasants, etc.), and had only recently been accepted. He was very
proud of this fact and wanted a portrait with him holding his gun.
The artist was having difficulty with certain aspects of the painting, which rearly
happens. Three completion dates were successively given and each one put forward again
to a new date by the artist. When the painting was finally completed the artist telephoned
Mrs Woolley, the sitter's wife, requesting a date to bring along the portrait. Mrs Woolley
said, in a matter of fact way: "Oh Philip, we buried him two weeks ago!"
Note: This photograph of the painting has lost much of the fine detail and colour subtlety.
