Tranquillity, picnic at the
castle

Picture title: Tranquillity, picnic at
the castle. Anna, Mena and friends at Castello Aragonese, Ischia. 1979.
Oil on canvas. Size: 51-1/8" x 73-5/8" (130cm x
187cm). Sold
Note: The photograph of the painting is out of focus. Note also the
strong shadows
on the left and right edges, cast by the thickness of the frame.
The canvas was painted at the villa I was using during the winter
period. I bought some timber from a local wood yard and made the
stretcher. (I had brought all my tools with me from Germany.) For
the canvas I purchased several metres of a strong fine cotton duck
cloth made for outdoor use, sold in the main town of Ischia; it was
a bright royal blue colour, the only colour available, and stretched
it on a wooden stretcher made for the purpose, and then gave it a
couple of primer undercoats; when dry I then nailed it over the
stretcher. I also had to make a temporary wooden easel to stand it
on, as my portable easel was too small to take such a large canvas.
For the setting I used my original work
Sweet innocence at the
castle,
(click) and scaled it up, which I originally wanted to paint as a
large canvas. The models were friends I met in Ischia, and asked
them to come and sit for me.
Once the canvas was well dried I removed it from the stretcher and
rolled it up to eventually bring it to England in the car. And that
is another story. |
