I am a pawn in the world.
University student, Köln

Picture title: I am a pawn in the
world. University student, Köln. 1975.
Oil on canvas. Size: 27-1/2" x 23-5/8" (70cm x 60cm).
Sold
Note: The photo of the painting has lost much of the fine
detail and colour subtlety.
This was left as
an unfinished painting in the period when I was living in
Düsseldorf, Germany.
The canvas was sold
shortly before my departure to Ischia in early 1979, even though it did not carry
my signature and date. Regrettably, I have forgotten the name of the sitter, not because of lack of her
influence and personality, for
she was a very beautiful person with high intelligence, studying
psychology at Köln University.
My main interests and concerns during this period were nutrition,
related to food manufacturing processes and the toxins used, and of
course, agro-chemical farming, the environment and
political corruption, and
remain so to this day. We, the sitter and I, used to have long discussions on such matters, and
she felt deeply oppressed
by government manipulation, having an unusual grasp and understanding of
national and international
affairs, and said she felt like a pawn in the world, hence my
title of the work. She implored me on more than one occasion to do
something, because these subjects were my frequent centre of focus. |
